The Western Powers, however, did not bow to this pressure and set up an airlift which supplied the beleaguered population for over a year, until the Russians backed down.
The airlift led to a change in the relationship between West Berliners and the western Allies, who were now no longer seen as "occupying" but rather as "protecting forces".
The "raisins bombers" got famous. Small chocolate parcels, dangeling from parachutes were thrown out of many airplanes for children of the city.
70 American and British crew members died at the flights from and to Berlin.
